Turning Japanese

Thanks to Pauline for pointing me toward your blog. I am very jealous of your assignment at Tokyo University. Last year I had two weeks of springtime in Tokyo and fell in love with the culture, the people and especially the food.

I wonder if the photo of all the small Buddha statues was taken at a temple near Kamakura? I saw a similar grouping in a temple garden while visiting with a Japanese friend. She told me that the statues were a shrine to aborted and miscarried children. While we paused in that part of the temple, a series of women came and made offerings in the garden. I probably have the story wrong, but the idea seemed to be so good and so powerful a way to handle the grief and loss.
